Health insurance in Spain can offer complete coverage, which includes specialists, diagnosis, emergency care, hospitalisation and surgery, or, limited coverage with GP´s in medical centres (without emergency care or hospitilization).
The initial request and renewal of a residency permit in Spain normally requieres a fully comprehensive policy (including hospitilization), without co-payments, issued by an accredited insurance company in Spain.
Co-payment is a fixed amount that you pay when you use a medical service. If you obtain a policy with co-payments, you will pay a small amount (less than market prices for the service) when you go to the doctor.
Each insurance company has its own list of private medical centres (medical directory). If you get an insurance policy with complete medical care, you can go to any specialist from the provided list. If your policy has the reimbursement option, you can go to any private hospital and present the invoice to the insurance company in order to get the percentage of the medical bills back, according to the policy.
Unfortunately, a fully comprehensive cover usually excludes the treatment of pre-existing medical conditions.
The cost of health insurance depends on your age and your place of residence. Furthermore, in many insurance companies the price depends on the number of people insured on the policy.
